Its one and two star share is 17 points above the typical installer in Santa Barbara. Across California, 288 of the 1,529 installers whose breakdown Google has published carry a higher share than this one.

The percentages are Google’s own arithmetic over every review it holds, not a sample we assembled. Separately we hold 6 review texts for this company, quoted below. Google publishes review ages rather than dates, so every date here is approximate.

Each mark is one company we hold in Santa Barbara whose Google breakdown has been read, placed by its share of one and two star reviews. Mac's Solar is the red one. The amber line is the middle of that set, which includes suppliers and maintenance businesses as well as installers.

I would not recommend this company to anyone. I was selling my house and didn't want the solar turned on in March. They were in the area and turned it on without my knowledge. We were moving out in April. I asked them to come back and turn it off and he gave me a HUGE argument as to why it should just be left on. I insisted on it being turned off so I would not pay for the pumps to push the water onto the roof when the house is on the market and it would not get warm for a month AFTER we were gone. He sent me a bill for coming and turning it off. I did not pay it but sent a not back as to why

Tony is easy to work with and is always on time. He shows up and does the scheduled maintance every 6 months. I highly recommend Macs Solar!

Mike and his team were great to work with. They did exactly what they said they would do when they said they would do it at the cost they quoted! Project went smooth as silk. Would recommend them highly to anyone looking for solar to heat a pool or spa!

What reviewers keep mentioning

Topics Google derives from the review text, with how often each appears. A frequent topic is not a good one: “price” turns up in praise and in complaints alike.

What the company says about itself

Taken from its own website. We have not checked any of it, and a sentence on a website is not evidence.

  • Family owned

“Partnership Mac's Solar is a local, family owned business operated by Michael McRae.”

  • Years in business

“have lived in Santa Barbara for over 58 years and have raised their…”

Its website also mentions established, but not in a sentence we can quote cleanly.

Elsewhere

  • It is also reviewed on the Better Business Bureau and Yelp. Worth reading before you sign anything: those are a different crowd, and the complaints that reach the Better Business Bureau rarely reach Google.

Ordered by how much we can tell you about each, which is not an order of quality. We do not know which of these is better and would not say if we did.

What we don't know

  • The date above is the newest review we hold, which is not necessarily the newest that exists — we hold a large share of Google's reviews, not all of them.
  • We do not verify licences, insurance or bonding. Nothing here has been checked against a state licensing board.
  • We cannot tell you what an installation costs, and we hold nothing about the equipment they fit.
